Mazda tops car brand reliability survey

It also includes tips on problems to watch out for in different cars. Mazda came top of the list for reliability with 17 warranty claims per 100 vehicles, although the average repair bill was high at £361. Alfa Romeo had 64 claims per 100 and a repair bill of £348. Researchers found the gearbox and suspension were common problems.

Mercedes finished in second place with 25 claims per 100 vehicles at an average cost of £314. Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi also made it into the top five.

Researchers found Subaru had the highest average repair bill at £614, while Fiat models came in cheapest at £191. Further details about the Reliability Survey 2001 can be found on the What Car? website.
