| Brits 'ditching alcohol for bottle water' Researchers claim Britons are turning their backs on alcohol in favour of soft drinks. Consumption of bottled water has doubled since 1996 while beer and wine drinking has dropped. The study by consumer analyst Mintel shows a third of adults cut back on alcohol in the last five years and 14% are now teetotal. Author of the report Rob Church tells The Observer, "There is no doubt drinking has declined since 1990. While people will always enjoy a few beers or a bottle of wine, they are becoming more discerning about when they drink and how much." Sales of mineral water, orange juice and energy drinks are growing faster than beer, wines and spirits. The study examined drinking habits in pubs, clubs and restaurants. After 20 years of increases, alcohol consumption fell by almost 5% between 1990 and 2000. For the first time ever, less than two- thirds of drinkers, say they regularly enjoy a pint. 7th October 2001 |
