| 49% of men enjoy reading on the toilet Four out of ten people use a visit to the toilet to enjoy a quiet read, according to a survey. Some 49% of men read while on the loo, compared to 26% of women, the NOP survey of 998 people showed. The Imperial Cancer Research Fund commissioned the survey to raise awareness of bowel cancer. April has been designated National Bowel Cancer Month, aimed at raising awareness of the third most common form of cancer in the UK. It is also the second biggest killer of all cancers - in 1996, 34,000 developed the disease and in 1998, 17,000 died from it. If diagnosed early enough, 90% of cases can be treated successfully, but the reluctance of many people to go to their doctors when symptoms first occur means that only 40% of sufferers survive beyond five years. For reading on the loo, newspapers are the most popular option, with 14% admitting to catching up on the current affairs whilst in the toilet. One in ten flicked through a magazine, while 8% read a book and 4% perused their bills. 19th October 2001 |
