| UK businesses face data wipe-out threat Researchers say hundreds of UK companies could be wiped out if they lose their data. A MORI survey for Safeonline found that 75% of UK businesses were inadequately covered against the risk of accidentally lost information. Around 60% of businesses did not trust the security advice of their own IT managers. The survey found that the biggest cause of accidentally-erased data was human error. Research showed that 32% of data loss is caused by human error. Data loss can also occur in a number of other ways;employee sabotage, unauthorised access; hacking;, physical damage and computer viruses which on their own, account for 7% of all data loss or damage. European president for Safeonline Stuart McMillan said: "Information held in computers can be a company's most valuable asset - and also its most vulnerable. "There is real danger in ignoring these types of risks for organisations of all sizes regardless of their sector." 4th October 2001 |
