Demand for glasses soars with Harry Potter mania

Opticians are reporting a boom in business as Harry Potter mania sweeps the country. They say fans want glasses similar to those of their hero.

One chain of opticians, Asda Vision Centres, has reported an increase in the number of children visiting their stores for eye tests. Conducting a survey among children visiting their stores, they discovered 40% had agreed to have an eye test because they wanted to wear spectacles like Harry Potter.

Asda's optical business director, David Miles, said: "It seemed strange the number of eye tests for children has sharply increased over the last few weeks. "You can imagine our surprise when we discovered it was due to kids wanting to look like Harry Potter. Anything which encourages children to have regular eye tests is great news."

Film experts are predicting Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone could be one of the biggest ever box office successes. Advance ticket sales have already topped the £1 million mark and it is set to open in an unprecedented 1,000 cinema screens across the UK alone. In US the film is being released as Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone.
