| Britons more likely to sleep naked British sleepers wear the least in bed compared with the rest of the world. The Sleep Council study has concluded 51% of UK residents go to sleep in the nude during the summer. However, only 30% of their counterparts across the globe nodded off with nothing on. The survey, which compared British sleeping habits with the rest of the world, also revealed sex was mentioned as a sleeping aid by 37% of all those surveyed, this rose to 39% for the UK. Only 7% of British sleepers use sleeping pills, as opposed to 18% foreigners. UK residents are also especially keen on eating chocolate before going to bed with almost three times as many (9.4%) indulging in this treat as the rest of the world (3.4%). Cold feet seem to have a reputation they do not fully deserve with only 1.4% saying they were woken by this compared with their partner's sweatiness (6.3%). The Sleep Council commissioned the internet survey of more than 700 people across the world. Thirty-eight per cent said they worked best in the evening, or in the morning (41%), showing the sleeping pattern of the human race is not best suited to the standard working day. Dr Chris Idzikowski, who conducted the study, said: "By showing a preference for morning or evening work, the implication is that the majority are not fully alert in the middle of the day - the traditional time for a siesta in hot countries. We must conclude that the traditional nine-to-five working day does not suit the majority." October 2001 |
