| 'Sniff yourself thinner' body lotion developed Scientists claim people wanting to lose weight will soon be able to sniff themselves thinner. Researchers in Japan have discovered certain smells stimulate the brain to discharge elements that burn fat. They say grapefruit, pepper, fennel and tarragon are particularly effective. Its scented body lotion may be in Japanese shops by spring. Cosmetics giant Shiseido Company is undertaking the research. A spokesman for Shiseido told Ananova the product - smelling of grapefruit or pepper - may be on the market in Japan in March, but no release date for a product has been set for the UK. The cost of the product is also unknown. In tests, 20 women who used their scented body lotion for one month lost an average of 1.1kg and became slimmer on their hips and waist. The company says the research is a world first for slimmers - and it's keeping the findings secret. It's based on the UCP (uncoupling protein) Theory. The researchers discovered UCP 'burns up' neutral fat when activated. When we smell certain scents, the sympathetic nerve system is stimulated and noradrenaline is released which leads to the burning up of body fat. Many drug companies are currently undertaking research into drugs that regulate UCP, because of its potential to combat fat. Shiseido is a leader in the field of 'aromachology' - the study of the effects of aromas on the human mind and body. 18th January 2002 |
