| Devoted dog stayed by dead owner's side for month A faithful dog lay beside its dead owner for almost a month before being discovered on the verge of death itself. Sandy, a 13-year-old Labrador-cross, stayed by the side of Jean Crichton after she died at her home three days after Christmas. Anxious neighbours alerted the police, who forced their way into the 66-year-old's home in Kirkliston, near Edinburgh. The officers found Ms Crichton slumped in her living room armchair with Sandy pining by her side. It is understood the elderly woman died of natural causes. Police contacted the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA), which took the emaciated dog to local veterinary surgery Mackie and Brechin, where staff have spent the last four days nursing Sandy back to health. The Scottish SPCA is now appealing for people to come forward and offer to give the dog a new home. Spokeswoman Doreen Graham said: "Our inspectors were called out to the old lady's house and found Sandy lying next to her. "He was in a really bad way and the only reason he managed to survive was by drinking water from the toilet bowl. Quite honestly, the dog was waiting to die. "He was taken to Mackie and Brechin and the staff knew him very well because Ms Crichton always bought her dog food there. The staff were determined Sandy would pull through and he has responded to their treatment magnificently." Although Sandy is still weak, he is expected to be well enough to move into a foster home over the weekend. 25th January 2002 |
