| Queercompany shuts up shop Queercompany, an online media and marketing business aimed at gay men and women, has gone under after running out of cash. The company and its recently launched print magazine Fable were both put up for sale on Monday, while all 28 staff have been made redundant. Queercompany blamed tough trading conditions and a drop in advertising revenues since the 11 September attacks. The company has had "a couple of enquiries" from potential new backers, a spokesman said. Launched in November 2000 with about £3.5m in start-up capital, Queercompany's online media, listings and e-commerce services were aimed at high-income professional gay men and women. An advertising campaign centred on billboard pictures showing two women kissing was investigated by the Advertising Standards Authority after a deluge of complaints from family groups. The company's highest profile venture was the Queer Card, a credit card aimed at gay shoppers wishing to "make a personal statement". The company launched its print magazine Fable, also targeted closely at high-earning professionals, in a bid to boost dwindling advertising income late last year. The magazine won editorial acclaim, but failed to generate the anticipated revenues. The Queercompany spokesman said that advertising sales had picked up in recent weeks. 28th January 2002 |
