| London 'officially EU's richest city' London is the richest city in the European Union, a new report has showed. The capital's economic output in 1999 was two-and-a-half times the EU average, according to the EU's statistics office. London scored 242% of the average, followed by Brussels (217%), the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (186%) and Hamburg (183%). Paris and Munich were placed fifth and sixth, while the French overseas island territory of Reunion in the Indian Ocean and Greece's Ipeiros came bottom of the poll with just 51% of the average. Twenty-two regions were above 125% of the EU average, while 46 regions were below 75%. The study measured gross domestic product per head for 1999 for 211 different regions of the 15 member states. The lowest rated regions in the UK were Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (65%) and Dorset and Somerset (67%). The highest, behind London, were Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire (131%) southern and eastern Ireland (122%) and north east Scotland (122%). Of the candidate countries wanting to join the EU, Prague, Bratislavsky and Cyprus came highest, while Romania scored lowest. 30th January 2002 |
