| Crime wave hits Downing Street Police are looking for over £100,000 worth of computers and mobile phones missing from Downing Street. Despite security guards and armed police, ministers admit items worth £102,000 are 'missing' since Labour came to power. The toll includes 37 computers, four mobile phones, a bicycle and a car stereo. The figures were revealed in the House of Commons. The missing mobile phones are particularly embarrassing for Labour, which announced a crackdown on mobile phone robbers this week. Last year, items to go missing included 13 computers worth £14,627, 10 laptop computers worth £13,800, two cameras valued at £714 and a MiniDisc player worth £200. Previously, video recorders, printers, projectors and a car stereo have also disappeared, reports The Daily Telegraph. The details of the items missing from the Prime Minister's office and the Cabinet Office were given in a written answer to John Bercow, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury. The Tories have demanded an inquiry, branding the revelations a waste of taxpayers money. 31st January 2002 |
