Poll highlights domestic abuse

Almost half of all women questioned in a medical poll have suffered physical violence at the hands of their partner.

GPs are said to be failing to identify the problem, with more than 80% of the victims carrying no record of the attacks in their medical notes. Researchers at London's Institute of Community Health Sciences found 41% of women had experienced physical violence. Women who had been pregnant in the past months were at most risk, followed by divorce or separated women, those under 45, and the unemployed.

More than 1,200 women attending general practices in Hackney, east London, took part in the research, published in the British Medical Journal. It found just 32% reported it to their doctor, and only 4% had been asked by their GP if they had been hit, injured or abused by a partner.

Co-author Professor Feder, said: "The high incidences of physical violence found in our research confirms that domestic violence is a serious health issue for many women and their children. "Most women experiencing domestic violence are not identified in their medical records. "We encourage clinicians to be more aware of the possibility of violence in the lives of patients, and to offer support, general advice and information about agencies that can provide help."
