| Work starts on exhumation of 126,000 graves in Singapore Work is underway to exhume 126,000 graves at a cemetery in Singapore. The Muslim and Christian graves are being moved to make way for a housing development. Politicians say the mass exhumation is expected to take five years to complete. People were buried in the plots at Bidadari Cemetery between 1907 and 1973, The Straits Times reports. Religious officials will oversee the project. Housing developers have asked relatives to register claims for their ancestors' graves by July 15. Unclaimed graves will still be exhumed but the remains will be cremated. 1st February 2002 |
